On Saturday, October 13, the Timber Creek Regiment met at 8 in the morning to begin their 2018 BOA journey. Chaperones and staff boarded the buses with the Regiment for the trip to Camping World Stadium, where they hoped to put on a performance that would place them in the top 10—with an invite to return for a performance in the Finals round of competition. Hopes were high, but the competition was fierce!
31 bands from all over Florida, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, and South Carolina competed in the preliminary competition. Local bands included University High School, Olympia High School, Seminole High School, Oviedo High School (which narrowly missed finals, placing 11th), and Cypress Creek High School (which competed in Finals with the Regiment).
With 31 bands competing, Mr. Cox placed the Regiment’s chances at about 50/50 going in. The Regiment’s prelims performance was stellar—their best yet! After the performance, the band returned to the school to eat lunch and rehearse for a bit in anticipation of being called back for finals. At 5:30, the text came in…the Regiment was in the finals! And not only that, but they placed third in their class and in the top 5 bands overall in prelims!
The chaperones and staff once again loaded up the buses with the students and everyone returned to Camping World Stadium for the finals performance. Newbury, the Class 1A champs performed in exhibition, and then the ten finalists performed their shows again. It was a long, long day, but every band set aside their exhaustion and put on a show to remember.
When the results were announced, we waited in the stadium to hear Timber Creek’s name…10th, 9th, 8th, 7th, 6th, and then finally 5th place! What an accomplishment! The Regiment was within .35 points of the 3rd place band, which tells you what a close competition it was.
Regiment parents, you should be SO PROUD of your students! Very few bands attend a BOA regional and even fewer make it to Finals. It’s an experience of a lifetime and a true honor that the vast majority of band members will never know. Thank you to Mr. Cox, Mr. Hoey, Mrs. Hoey, Mr. Tirado, and all of the staff for crafting such a fantastic show and whipping our students into shape. Next up in the competition season is finding out if the Regiment is invited to State Finals!
Final Results: 1st Tarpon Springs, 2nd Park Vista, 3rd Harrison (GA), 4th Stoneman Douglas, 5th Timber Creek, 6th Sparkman (AL), 7th Cypress Creek, 8th Cleveland (NC), 9th Seminole, 10th JP Taravella.
