This past Saturday, October 6, 2018, Timber Creek Regiment competed in their first competition of 2018. The Central Florida Marching Arts Invitational in Leesburg, Florida, was a regional competition to determine who would be moving on the state competition in November, so the stakes were high.
The Regiment competed against 12 other bands from the Central Florida/North Central Florida area, including this week’s football game opponent, Boone High School. Highlights of the show were Trinity Catholic’s performance based on “The Greatest Showman” and Lake Minneola’s selections from the musical “Wicked.” Every band brought creativity to the field, with everything from marimba players using violin bows on their keys to a vocal solo of Cold Play. And there were plenty of woodwind solos (including show openers!), which makes this flute player happy.
The competition was divided into two segments: prelims and finals. The top band from each class (from 2A-5A) advanced to finals, along with the three next highest-scoring bands.
In prelims, Trinity Catholic High School took 1st place in Class 2A, Wekiva High School took 1st place in 3A, Lake Minneola High School took 1st place in Class 4A, and Timber Creek High School took 1st place in Class 5A. In addition, William R. Boone High School, Tavares High School, and Lake Minneola High School were invited to advance to finals.
In finals, the seven remaining bands performed their show again for the judges. After the performances were complete and the hosts, Leesburg High School, performed their show for exhibition, the bands lined the field for retreat and awards were announced. As the highest-scoring percussion ensemble, Timber Creek’s battery played the cadence for the bands as they marched onto the field.
In this competition, they awarded 7th-1st place and best in show Music, General Effect, Visual Effect, Percussion, and Auxiliary (color guard and dance). All awards were based on scores earned in the final performance. The finals results were: in 3rd place, with a score of 74.5, Lake Minneola High school; in 2nd place, with a score of 75.55, Boone High School; and in 1st place, with a score of 86.8, Timber Creek High School! Timber Creek also took all of the best in show awards.
We are SO PROUD of our Regiment for a truly phenomenal effort at regionals! Winning by over 10 points doesn’t happen every day and students should be proud of their performances. As we head into BOA competition week, here’s hoping out students can take it up a notch. If they continue improving as they have been, they can really shine at BOA!
